The Butter Battle Book, Ralph Bakshi, 1989

  1. Although you mentioned this to be from 1984, it's really from 1989 (first aired as a special on TNT), and was based on a book written by Theodor "Dr. Seuss" Geisel in '84.

I consider this possibly the best adaptation ever done of a Dr. Seuss book itself (not counting the later stuff done after his death). Bakshi certainly didn't try to divert far from the adaptation and put a lot of restraint on his own embellishments to produce this special. It certainly feels like a Seuss cartoon much in the way I felt the specials made by DePatie-Freleng in the 70's were (the Chuck Jones ones from the 60's otherwise often had clashes between him and Geisel).

  2. Thanks, Chris. Unfortunately, the video has been taken down (it happens, that's fine.) I just wanted to say, if anyone has any information to add, or corrections, I absolutely welcome your input.
