The first time I saw this it was 4:30 in the morning and I couldn't find any information about it whatsoever.

This is a somewhat talky film from Estonian puppet animation studio Nukufilm, and I couldn't find a version with subtitles.
The synopsis from Nukufilm's site:

Based on the short story “Living Dolls” by estonian writer Anton Hansen Tammsaare.
“Having Soul” is the story of a little boy and his big dream – toy soldiers with souls, who would close their eyes, when dying.
