I remember seeing this before it won (I think), and then having to hear from those who thought the ending was tacked on to please those animal rights people, yet I thought it was a nice little twist and perhaps plays on our modern sensibilities that the wolf got to be let go at the end, and I'm sorry for spoiling that for anyone who just showed up here to find out!
